The Authority of Jesus

Bible passage: Mark 1:14-28

Mark's gospel has already introduced John the Baptist as one preparing the way for Jesus. In verse 14 we are told that Jesus begins to preach after John has been imprisoned.

(1) We are not told, here, why John is imprisoned but how this might have inspired Jesus to begin announcing the Kingdom of God?

(2) In what ways might John's conflict with the authorities point towards Jesus' life and ministry?

In verse 15, Mark gives a brief but powerful summary of Jesus' message. Phrases are used such as 'the gospel' (good news), 'The Kingdom of God' and 'repent and believe'.

(3) These words are, of course, very common in Christian circles but how often do we spend time thinking about their meaning. What do they mean?

(4) In what ways is thier meaning lived out in the stories which follow? (e.g. v16-v28)

(5) What about ways that their meaning is lived out in your own life?

When Jesus speaks in the synagogue and when he casts out the demon we are told that the people are amazed at his authority.

(6) Why does he have such authority?

(7) Throughout his ministry does Jesus behave in a way that you would expect someone with authority to behave?

(8) Following Jesus involves recognising his kingly authority. How might this influence our lifestyles? Does recognising his authority mean that our lives will be peaceful and free of conflict?
