Bible passage: Mark 2:13 - 3:19 The text for this Sunday is too long for a detailed study. Instead this study follows some themes which run through this section. At the beginning of Mark's Gospel we noticed Jesus beginning his ministry by announcing that 'The Kingdom of God is near' (Mk 1:15). This announcement is lived out in the rest of Jesus story. (1) In Mark 2:21-22 we read of Jesus contrasting 'the new' and 'the old' - what seems to be new about Jesus and his teaching?
For example, in the story of Levi's call (2:13-17), (2) In 2:19-20 Jesus talks about appropriate behaviour for a bridegrooms guests - what do you think he means? (3) Why did Jesus draw such large crowds? (3:7-12) (4) Perhaps he drew crowds because his message was controversial, liberating or exciting? Can you see evidence for these suggestions? (5) Being around Jesus seems to have involved enjoyable meals, parties and celebrations. How does this relate to your experience of being a Christian?
