Bible passage: Psalm 2 and Revelation 19:12-21

It is easy to be intimidated by the powers of evil and the might of the nations of the earth.
The passages we shall look at today present us with the perspective from heaven.

(Read Psalm 2)

How does the Lord view the power of nations? (v4-6)
What is the image of the Lord in these verses?
Anointed One, in v2, is ‘Messiah’ in Hebrew, ’Christ’ in Greek. What in this psalm reminds you of Jesus, and what presents a picture of Jesus that is unfamiliar to you?

The psalm begins and ends with references to kings and rulers, how do they relate to the King enthroned by the Lord?
How are they encouraged to relate to the Lord in v10-12?

It is always easier to pray for personal needs than political situations, but Psalm 2 is entirely political. How should our prayers focus on our politicians in Scotland, and on the presidential campaign in America, for example?

(Read Revelation 19:11-16)

How does this vision of Jesus’ return differ from the vision we have of Jesus in his first coming?
Like a champion ready for battle, Jesus appears on horseback. What do we learn about him? ’Faithful’ and ‘True’ are the key descriptions of Jesus: is that your experience of the Lord in your life, and in what ways?
Imagine you are among those who have suffered the atrocities of the Beast and his armies. How would you feel as you see your champion coming to meet them in battle?

(Read Revelation 19:17-21)

Why must this battle take place before the kingdom of God can fully come? How is full salvation not possible unless God deals finally with radical evil?
How does this vision help us to cope with the reality of evil apparently triumphing in our world?
What does this say to those who are suffering under an oppressive regime or an evil totalitarian government?

What do you look forward to most about Christ’s return?
